Kiku Sumi

Charcoal is a natural material that has excellent adsorption properties that remove dirt and excess sebum from pores, keeping the skin clean.

The Kiku Sumi charcoal used in NAIA's facial cleanser is sourced from Notohahaso, a charcoal maker in the Higashiyamanaka community of Suzu City. The charcoal used is made from Noto oak trees, carefully roasted by artisans using traditional techniques.

Beautiful chrysanthemum charcoal carefully hand-roasted from oak trees

Chrysanthemum charcoal is a beautiful type of charcoal that has a pattern resembling a chrysanthemum flower when cut. It is used in the tea ceremony to help remove impurities from tea and bring out its mellow flavor.

Hand-baked charcoal contains a lot of air, and its fine particles are porous, so it efficiently absorbs dirt into the holes, giving you clearer, more radiant skin.

Nothohahaso

Notohahaso has a workshop in the mountains of Suzu City. Oak trees are planted in the surrounding countryside to produce charcoal, and the company's president, Choichiro Ohno, hand-fires the ware using traditional methods.

The stumps of trees cut down in the fall produce new shoots called "hikoboshi" the following spring, allowing them to be cut down again in a few years. Notohahaso utilizes the blessings of the forest to provide a sustainable lifestyle through charcoal.
